CIUTHACH

CIUTHACH, 52, a cave-dweller, also said of a person with long shaggy hair.

When I asked around about this word I was told instead of ciutha, a similar word referring to a neat hairbun: “a woman with long hair, making a ciutha, putting the back of her head ma chiuthar” [South Uist]. But this is far from shaggy.

Fieldwork in Garrynamonie found this word defined as “a big, lazy person who doesn’t go out much. He was sitting indoors like a ciuthach.”

In Skye, the word has been noted as “a monster taking the shape of a man. He’s just a ciuthach of a man.”
