BUIGLEAG

BUIGLEAG, 131, a soft-backed crab. A lukewarm indifferent character. [A soft potato. Also appertains to a soft person. J.M.]

Dwelly has “Bog, soft place, quagmire; anything very soft; crab after casting its shell; coward, soft unmanly fellow; a soft, wet potato” for buigileag or buigleag.

Màiri Thormoid in Eriskay recognised this as referring to someone fat (“if you were fat you were a buigleag.”)

It was noted in Garrynamonie, in 1988-9 that a buigleag was chubby and rather soft person.

Unfortunately by the time I had learned all this I had already made my print of a not-so chubby soft unmanly fellow.
